Pennepack Creek Baptismal Rock
This old photo, from the church archives, shows the Baptismal Rock in Pennepack Creek. The first baptism in Pennsylvania took place here 318 years ago, when Pennepack Baptist received into the church Joseph and Jane Ashton, William Fisher, and John Watts. Mr. Watts was married to Sarah Eaton, a founder of the church and the sister of our John Eaton. Thousands of people were subsequently immersed at this spot. Unfortunately, in recent decades, the stone that projected into the creek over the pool was blown up with dynamite by the city of Philadelphia to make way for a stormwater pipe, according to Pennepack historian Pat Stopper.
